Artistic Styles

Photorealism

Photorealism is a stimulated image that looks like a photograph but isn't. Photorealism used in popular games like The Last of us and The Division, Dear Esther is a game with a mixture of styles. It uses photorealism and elements of a painting. The game's art style makes it immersive due to its dark and atmospheric visuals. Photorealism is getting more popular in video games due to its immersion bringing the game to life. Famous game companies like DICE and CRYTEK have been using photorealism for a long time.

Surrealism

Surrealism is the creative potential of the unconscious mind, its used in games but mixed with different art styles. For example an indie game called Journey has implementations of surrealism but intertwined with an illustrated cartoony art style. Other games implement surrealism but very vaguely for example Hotline Miami which has a retro surrealistic art style

Retro

Retro is a style that is derivative and/or imitates trends, music or attitudes of the recent past typically 15-20 years. The retro art style is seen in games like Dead Pixels, Hotline Miami and Penny Arcade's on the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness 3

Abstract

Abstract is a very unique art style within games. The reason for this is because you can do so much with it. Usually Abstract games combine the usage of very bright vibrant colours alone with geometric/random shapes. They often use random patterns.

An example of abstract gaming in this case is Geometry Wars. This game uses a lot of vibrant colours within to portray the fast paced action game its designed to be. This type of game will hype the player and get the adrenaline going so they can be more immersed.
