Understanding the Methods and Principles of Sound Design and Production

Different Sound Types (Sound File Formats.)

Uncompressed (Not Compressed):
WAV: WAV (Wave) is an audio file format created by Microsoft. The WAV file is a standard uncompressed PC audio file format for everything from System Sound, Game Sounds and CD-quality audio. It stores information about the number of tracks and whether it's mono or stereo.

AIFF: AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is a common audio file format used on Apple Macs. An AIFF file contains raw audio data and retains information about selected regions of audio data.

AU: AU (Audio) is an audio file format and it contains the audio data. AU file formats allow the storage of audio files.

SMP: SMP is a 16-bit mono sound and provide support for loops.

Lossy Compression:

MP3: is a means of compressing sound into a very small file, to enable digital storage. 

RA: RA (RealAudio) may be included in web browsers to deliver sound from websites 

VOX: is an optimised audio file that is mostly used in phone applications.


Audio Sampling 

What is Sample Rate?

Sample rate is the number of audio samples carried per second, which is measured in Hertz (Hz).

What is Mono? 

Mono only uses one channel, it can be produced through several speakers, but all speakers are still produced using the same copy as the original.







What is Stereo?

In stereo sound more channels are used sometimes two channels are used. Stereo is used to create perspective in games.
