File Extensions

File extensions are a string of characters attached to a filename, usually preceded by a full stop and indicating the format of the file. In Microsoft Windows the file extension name is a period that is often followed by three characters but may also be followed by one, two or four characters long. For example the file name .myfile.txt has an extension of .txt which is a file extension associated with text files.

Types of file Extensions

There are thousands of file extensions that exist some are common, some are uncommon and people don't know that they exist or what they do. The common file extensions are the Windows file extensions for example .EXE (PC Application), BMP (Bitmap), .AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) and .WAV (Windows Sound). The uncommon file extensions are .MSSTYLES (Windows Visual Style File), .JSE (An encrypted JavaScript file), .REG (Windows Registry File) and .INF (Set up Information File.)

Common File Extensions

.EXE - An executable program file. Most applications running on Windows are .EXE files

.BMP - is a raster graphics image file format used to store Bitmap images

.AIFF - is an audio file format used to store sound data for PC or other electronic devices

.WAV - is a Windows audio file format that stores audio bit stream


Uncommon File Extensions

.MSSTYLES - is a Microsoft file format that contains BMPs and metadata for Windows XP

.JSE - An encrypted JavaScript file

.REG - is a list of registry entries that will be added or removed if you run them

.INF - A text file used by AutoRun
